Facts About Myanmar
Myanmar (formerly Burma) is a Southeast Asian nation of more than 100 ethnic groups, bordering India, Bangladesh, China, Laos and Thailand.
Yangon (formerly Rangoon), the country’s largest city, is home to bustling markets, numerous parks and lakes, and the towering, gilded Shwedagon Pagoda, which contains Buddhist relics and dates to the 6th century.
Myanmar, country, located in the western portion of mainland Southeast Asia. In 1989 the country’s official English name, which it had held since 1885, was changed from the Union of Burma to the Union of Myanmar; in the Burmese language the country has been known as Myanma (or, more precisely, Mranma Prañ) since the 13th century. The English name of the city that served as the country’s capital from 1948 to 2006, Rangoon, also was dropped in 1989 in favor of the common Burmese name, Yangon.
Myanmar is the largest country of Southeast Asia area wise with an area of 676,575 square km. Around 96.94% of the total area of Myanmar is covered by land, and 3.06% of the area iscovered by water. The country was earlier known as Burma until 1989. The military Junta renamed it Myanmar in the same year.
The capital of Myanmar was changed from Yangon to Naypyidaw in 2006.
In Myanmar, both men and women wear sarongs, popularly known as lungyi. It is the traditional dress of Myanmar.
