In this video you will meet Alcântara, a municipality in the São Luís Metropolitan Region, in the state of Maranhão. A city full of ruins, beautiful tours, breathes a lot of history, wonderful cuisine. We showed what we did in 2 days in Alcântara, where we stayed, where we ate and the tours we did with our Caroline tab of @alcantaraturismooficial. Its estimated population in 2014 was 2,652 inhabitants. It has an area of 1457.96 square kilometers, part of the territory of the municipality is on the island of Livramento where is the headquarters of the municipality. The area of the current municipality was inhabited by Tupinambás Indians, in a village called Tapuitapera. The French were established in the early seventeenth century, and later expelled by the Portuguese. The village was elevated to the village of Santo António de Alcântara in 1648, being the headquarters of the Captaincy of Cumã. During the colonial period, it was an important agricultural and commercial center. In the nineteenth century, the city entered a period of decay, remaining as witness to its golden period the architectural collection of its historic center, listed by Iphan, in 1948. The city is also well known for its species sweets. The feast of the Divine Holy Spirit (“Party of the Divine”) is widespread in the state, as it is approximately 15 days of celebration during which they are served, for free, liqueurs and sweets. Access to the city can also be done by ferry-boat system, which connect the city of São Luís to the port of Cujupe, Alcântara, as well as by smaller boats and catamarans leaving the Piero Grande Cais, in downtown São Luís.
