La Fortuna, Costa Rica, is one of the best places to experience the country’s natural beauty. Known for Arenal Volcano, this town offers everything from hiking and wildlife spotting to relaxing in natural hot springs.

The town itself is small and walkable, with Parque de La Fortuna at its center. Around the square, you’ll find restaurants, souvenir shops, and tour agencies. A short walk away is Parroquia San Juan Bosco, a modest church with a peaceful atmosphere.

One of the best things we did was visit the Bogarin Trail, a great spot to see Costa Rica’s famous sloths. There’s some debate about whether a guide is necessary, but we hired one and were glad we did. Our guide, Randall, pointed out wildlife we would have never spotted on our own, including frogs, birds, and sloths.

We went for the 4 PM tour, which was perfect because the temperature was cooler, and we got to see nocturnal animals as it got dark.

For our second day, we booked a tour that covered some of La Fortuna’s top attractions. We found it cheaper to book in person rather than online, but it’s a good idea to book early if you’re traveling with a group.

Our first stop was La Fortuna Waterfall. To reach it, you’ll need to go down about 500 steps, but the trail is well-maintained, with benches and water stations along the way. Swimming is usually allowed at the base, but during our visit, the currents were too strong.

Next, we visited Arenal Volcano National Park. After signing a waiver, we hiked through the rainforest to a lava field, one of the best viewpoints of the volcano. Unfortunately, the peak was completely covered in clouds, which is pretty common here.

After the hike, our guide handed out shots of moonshine before taking us to El Chollín, a free natural hot spring river. Unlike the expensive hot spring resorts in La Fortuna, this is a more casual spot where locals go to soak in the warm water. There are no changing rooms or bathrooms, and you’ll need to keep an eye on your belongings.

We skipped the hanging bridges, another popular activity, since they cost $50 per person, and there are similar experiences in other parts of Costa Rica.

Food in La Fortuna is diverse but can be expensive in the town center. A great budget-friendly option was Soda Viquez, where we had a delicious traditional meal for $7.

For accommodation, we stayed in an Airbnb near the church, costing $103 for two nights. It had air conditioning, an en-suite bathroom, and a shared kitchen. The location was convenient, within walking distance of shops and the Bogarin Trail.

La Fortuna was a great mix of adventure and relaxation. If you’ve been here, let us know your favorite part in the comments, and don’t forget to like and subscribe!
