Episode 2: Gear Check
Before I go on my motorcycle trip through Namibia, Angola, the Victoria Falls and Botswana, I am checking my gear, and introducing the hardware I’ll have with me on the trip. Here we go.
Today I thought that after the introduction of last I would show you a bit more about the hardware of the trip. The hardware of today is the most important is my motorbike. I’m going to tackle the trip on this 2013 BMW 1200 GS. And I’ve had it now for almost nine years. I bought it with about 15,000 kilometers on its clock and it’s now standing on about 100,000. The top box at the back, I think for the journey it’s a bit too rigid and if I come down or fall it may break. So I think soft luggage is a better option. And now it starts to rain and I’ve got to get out of the rain. The only stuff I’ve ever fitted aftermarket is these two lights, the two small side lights to make it a bit more visible and also the foot pegs.
At some stage I fitted these. It’s easier for if it’s a bit rough terrain and you have to stand so your foot wouldn’t slip. And the rest of my baggage, my luggage system I will show you inside the house it’s too rainy to do it on the outside, but that’s the bike. And then the second part of the hardware, which I think is just as important obviously is all my luggage system. I showed you my top box on the bike that I’m going to remove. I plan to install this platform on the back and then I will fasten this watertight or waterproof plastic case. And then in front of this, in front of the where the toe box now is, I will install this green bag. This will be you. I will use this for my clothes and it’s quite a large one.
I think it’s a 40 liter bag. This one is not waterproof so I’ll use this for my sleeping bag which I will wrap in a plastic bag, put it inside and with a couple of other rain gear to be easy accessible. Then I’ve got this soft luggage panniers which will hang both sides. And then lastly as I said, clothes in this one, sleeping bag and rain stuff in this and in this I’m not so 100% sure but it may be my first aid kit, little bit of tools and stuff like that. I’m not 100% sure yet. And then this is fitted on my tank. That’s my tank bag which is very nice, you know, to keep petrol money and stuff. I’ll put in that tank bag.
And then on this side I want to show you I bought this extra, our 6 liter petrol bag, petrol tank that I. I won’t utilize at this stage. It’s just for. I’m not sure how available petrol may be at Angola. So, you know, maybe I use it, maybe I don’t, but I’d rather have it and then battle without it. Then I will show you later on. This little device is fantastic. It is an electronic wheel air pump. If I have a flat wheel or something, or I need to deflate my tyres and then inflate it again. It’s about the size of a satellite phone and with all its connections, you can charge it, you don’t have to link it to your bike, but you can. And so that’s my. That’s my luggage system.
As I carry on, I will show you when it’s fitted to the bike. I’ve ordered a satellite phone for one month’s use and they’ve sent me this. So I’m going to take this box. I’m not sure how it works yet, I’ll have to check it out. But that’s my satellite phone that I’ll also fit somewhere in the luggage and. Yeah, and that’s it, that’s the system.
