South America is a large continent comprised of the very large and prominent countries of Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia and many more. But there’s three countries on the same land mass as the rest of South America – Guyana, Surinam, and French Guiana – that don’t feel much like South America at all! In fact, they’re often left out of all conversations, organizations, and references when South America is thought of as a single unit. So why are the Guianas not considered to be South American?

In this video, we’ll cover the unique geography of the three countries and how they’re geologically isolated from the rest of South America, the history of each and why they speak English, Dutch and French, and why, ultimately, the Guianas have more in common the with the Caribbean than they do with their Spanish and Brazilian-speaking neighbors.
