One of the wildest things that you can do in Africa that not too many people know about is this incredible sleeper train journey. The TAZARA train travels between Tanzania and Zambia, and is a straight up blast from the past. It is truly a relic from a bygone era, but is somehow chugging along to this day. It is old, unreliable, and uncomfortable, but wow, if you are an adventurous traveler with a desire for something rugged and unforgettable, hopping on this train might be for you.
It only cost $37 for a first-class sleeper cabin, which is easily one of the best $37 I’ve ever spent. Although it was far from luxurious, it was an excellent price for such a one-of-a-kind trip. The cost covered the room for the entire journey, no matter how long it takes. In my case, it took three days to finish half of the journey before the train broke down and couldn’t continue any further. That is part of the surprise of booking the TAZARA. You truly never know what you are going to get. Very few things about this train make sense. It was sheer will that got me through all of the frustrations I faced from the weeks leading up to booking the train to the moment it broke down shortly after the Zambian border.
Regardless, this is something out of a movie itself. It really is just one of the few things you can do today that authentically feels like you’ve traveled to a different time period. The iconic African landscapes, remote villages, and wildlife that we passed were sights to behold.
