Azerbaijan tour | Baku City Tour | Baku Flame Tower | Azerba…
Azerbaijan was an independent nation from 1918 to 1920 but was then incorporated into the Soviet Union. It became a constituent (union) republic in 1936. Azerbaijan declared sovereignty on September 23, 1989, and independence on August 30, 1991.
Baku Flame Towers are a symbol of the historic past and the future strength and potential of Azerbaijan. The design was conceived as a set of flames, driven from the ground up one of the main hills of Baku. Fire symbolizes energy and eternity, and also goes back to the ancient worship of this element.
Baku is derived from the old Persian Bagavan, which translates to “City of God”. A folk etymology explains the name Baku as derived from the Persian Bādkube (بادکوبه ), meaning “city where the wind blows”, due to frequent winds blowing in Baku.
