Santa Ana, El Salvador doesn’t try to impress you—and maybe that’s what makes it stick. In this vlog, we spend three full days getting to know the city. From hiking the country’s highest volcano to tasting local sweets and joining a walking tour, this is a raw, real travel experience that grew on us more each day.

Day 1 started with heat. Coming from the cooler mountains of Honduras, Santa Ana felt tropical and intense—but the city had a warm vibe that matched. We checked into Casa Verde hostel, grabbed lunch at Simmer Down Café, and walked through the gritty but colorful city center. The Catedral de Santa Ana stood out with its neo-Gothic design—totally different from the usual colonial look in Central America. We also sampled traditional Salvadoran candies and cooled off with iced coffee at Beats Café.

Day 2 was all about the Santa Ana Volcano hike. It’s a must-do, and while the trail was busy (thanks to Christmas crowds), the payoff at the top—a teal crater lake—was worth every step. Our hostel arranged a simple transfer that also included a lakeside lunch at Coatepeque. The food there? Overpriced. But the lake views were great. Later that night, we wandered the lit-up streets and grabbed dinner at a street stall and China Wok. Not amazing, but it hit the spot.

Day 3 was the game-changer. We joined a walking tour with Fátima, Santa Ana’s only female guide, and she really brought the city to life. Her stories gave meaning to everything we’d already seen, from the Cathedral to the post-fire market setup. We had lunch at a local park market—delicious tostadas and sandwiches for just over $6. She also tipped us off to the best ATMs and where to find late-night groceries. We didn’t love the pupusas from the “best” place, but the orange coffee at a hidden café made up for it.

Santa Ana felt uncertain at first, but it grew on us fast. Locals are open and welcoming, and there’s more to see than you’d expect—if you know where to look. We ended our time with a ride to Ruta de las Flores. That vlog is coming up next, so stick around.
