The Integrated Center for Genetic Diseases of the Faculty of Medicine of USP (CIGEN-FMUSP) is a newly created organization and approved by the Congregation of FMUSP in August 2023. Its main objective is to improve and improve patient care in the area of genetic diseases , covering diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation. Furthermore, CIGEN aims to train medical and non-medical professionals, carry out research projects and propose public policies in the area of genetic diseases, including rare and non-rare conditions. The Faculty of Medicine of the University of São Paulo has a strong history in Human and Medical Genetics, with roots dating back to the 1960s, establishing a collaborative network of Medical and Multi-professional Services, including Clinical and Research Laboratories, with a focus on Medical Genetics and Genomics. USP Biosciences Institute and the Jô Clemente Institute are partner institutions particularly involved in neonatal screening and the development of therapies for the treatment of Rare Diseases (RD), training medical and non-medical professionals, carrying out research projects and defending public policies, governance corporate and system integration to enable cost and quality medical care in public health.
