BOTSWANA to SOUTH AFRICA – Camping & Selfdrive in Kgalagadi …
We close our chapter in Botswana with one final national park: Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park — a vast wilderness shared between Botswana and South Africa. We mainly focus on the Mabuasehube sector, known for its remoteness and raw, untamed feel.
Once again, we show up without bookings, this time during the Christmas holidays. Not ideal but somehow, it all works out. We settle into camps that feel completely submerged in the wild. No fences. No facilities beyond the basics. And with the December heat, we’re especially grateful for the shade of the A-frames.
Even in camp, we see signs of predators passing through, drawn to the same shelter we seek. And at some point… it gets a little too wild. (Let’s just say we weren’t alone one night.)
Compared to CKGR, animal sightings are fewer — for us at least — but the atmosphere is something else. Mabuasehube feels raw, intimate, and intense in its own quiet way.
Eventually, we cross into South Africa, continuing through the southern part of KTP. A little less wild. A little more structured. But what a way to cross a border…
